It’s your first day in a new school and you don’t know anyone. Making your first friend is tough. Getting a 2nd friend is easier. A 3rd friend is even easier.

It works the same way when you start a Facebook Fan Page. It’s way easier for you to Like a fan page when you see 1000 other people have Liked it. There’s more friction if you see you’ll be the FIRST person to Like a page.

It’s a phenomenon known as social proof or a herd mentality.

When you start your Facebook Fan page, the conversion rate of views-to-Likes will automatically increase over time (unless you’re saturating your target market with ads).

To leverage that insight and maximize the power of social proof, you should concentrate on getting a small group of fans as cheaply as possible.  That usually means started a very targeted Facebook Ads campaign to ensure a high view-to-Like conversion rate.  After you get some momentum, broaden your targeting and expand your campaign.
